AP Environmental Science: Lab: Heat of Combustion: Pre-Lab Instructions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heat of Combustion Pre-Lab Requirements: Be ready to perform the experiment on Tuesday, 9/1.

Download the Heat of Combustion Lab in the resources section of our website.

In your lab notebook you must have:

1. Title
2. Purpose
3. Materials list
4. Hand-written procedures, no printouts (fully understanding the procedures before you start the lab is key to your success)
5. Data table

If you do not understand what you are doing when you arrive Tuesday morning, you might encounter avoidable errors while attempting the experiment and find yourself unable to complete the lab in the allotted time.

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: Oil Spill Articles, Ethics Essays, and Environmental Philosophy Essay Assignment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After completing the readings below, compose an essay in which you respond to the following prompt:

Moncrief argues that White’s claims (about the ecological crisis being deeply rooted in religious ideology) are too simple. While Moncrief appears to agree with White that the JudeoChristian tradition has fewer constraints on human domination of nature, Moncrief thinks there are other factors that are more fundamental to our current ecological crisis. What is White’s argument? What is Moncrief’s rebuttal to White’s argument and what factors does Moncrief attribute to the cause of the ecological crisis? How might White respond to Moncrief and his claim that non-religious factors have influenced the ecological crisis? Whose arguments do you find most persuasive, and why? Explain your answers in detail. Be sure to also use one or two examples from the two articles on oil spills to support your arguments.

APES Syllabus Jigsaw Assignment Instructions (Detailed)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview

In pairs or solo, design and create a poster describing (with both images and text) the assigned section of the syllabus.

Creativity counts! The area of your finished poster must be equivalent to that of four standard copy paper sheets.

Poster presentations will begin tomorrow, 8/13 and wrap up on 8/14.

The purpose of creating these posters is to give both of the APES classes a kind of roadmap for the year (the posters will be hung together in one large grouping) as well as a providing a resource for reviewing these ideas just before the AP exam in May.

Specific Requirements

Your poster should include:
  • your name(s) along with standard heading in upper left corner
  • a clear and prominent title (the name of the unit as printed on the syllabus)
  • a logical (to you) arrangement** of the topics (the ones listed on the section of the syllabus selected by you and your partner)
  • hand-drawn pictures, printed photos, or printed graphics (from your own personal photos or from the Web) to represent / help describe the topics
  • Brief definitions to help explain some of the more esoteric (less common) terms on your poster

**You may consider using a concept or bubble map style to relate the topics to the main topic of the unit

Welcome to Biology 1-2 or AP Environmental Science with Mr. Bursch

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! And for those that are new to the school, welcome to Willow Glen High!

This year will bring new challenges and stories. It will see the continuing development of the GROW Rams initiative and the expansion of agroecology and food education efforts on our campus, with Mr. Bursch's students leading the charge.

This website will be updated on a daily basis and is a place for students and parents to find brief summaries of each day's activities, homework assignments, and reminders for upcoming tests, projects, and important dates.

Parents, this can be an exciting and stressful time for you, too, especially if this is your child's first year of high school. Please do make use of this resource and don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting all of you at Back to School Night.

Stay tuned!
